Forest Products
The market was strong heading into this past weekend and then there was Katrina, possibly the most devastating hurricane to ever hit the US. Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi took the brunt of the damage and it is currently ripping through the southeast.

OSB (south central)
The market reacted to Hurricane Katrina in an unbelievable, almost unprecedented manner. Prices moved up in triple digits and were changing constantly (even during discussions on price quotes). Mills went off the market, came back on, went off again, etc, each time at dramatically higher levels. Imported plywood was cleaned up quickly at premiums. The best way of describing the market is it went out of control much like the gas prices. What is different about the effect of this hurricane on the panel market versus past hurricanes is the momentum continues post hurricane and probably will for awhile. Lean field inventories, lost production, government purchases, and strong consumption all factored into the already firm panel market. Prices should continue to appreciate over the next few weeks before this settles down.

Price Increases
OSI - Due to unprecedented raw material cost and supply challenges, increased energy and petroleum-based raw materials, the market is experiencing shortages of some of these materials. Effective October 22, 2005, increases will vary depending on the impact of raw materials and other related cost factors, but are in the range of 5-10%. Based on the tight supply of these materials, OSI needs to minimize large orders at the old prices. Therefore, quantities on any order prior to October 22, 2005 will be approved by your OSI Sales Manager and may not exceed one month’s sales history. Requested ship dates may not exceed 30 days from the order date.

The following increases have gone into effect.

Elk Roofing September 1, 2005
Owens Corning September 1, 2005

Please contact Real Building Supply for specific details of the amounts of the increase in our area.
